Do you have the motivation you need to reach your goal?

Most people move towards pleasure and away from pain. In life coaching and NLP, we refer to these as "towards" and "away from" motivations. "Towards" motivation involves pursuing something you want, while "away from" motivation involves avoiding something you don’t want.

Both types of motivation can be effective, but which one is more beneficial for achieving your goals?

Let's take a closer look at how these two types of motivation work. Imagine hiking on a trail and suddenly seeing a snake near your feet. You need to get away from it—so which way do you jump? The answer is: it doesn’t matter.

Any direction will do as long as you escape from this terrifying situation.

Once you get far enough away from the snake, you feel safe again and your immediate motivation to move disappears. If "away from" motivation is all you rely on, it dissipates as soon as you're distant enough from what you want to avoid.

Someone motivated solely by "away from" factors will remain stationary until something else they dislike prompts them to move again.
